A wonderful sunny Saturday, was just calling after the trip. We had skiing in plan, but because of the high temperatures we decided to go to the seaside. The decision was very simple where to go. This time we decided to go to Trieste to walk the picturesque Rilke’s footpath.
Rilke’s footpath
Rilke’s footpath or Sentiero Rilke, as the locals call it, is a popular 2 km long footpath. The trail is located between Sesljan and Devin, and is located along the edge of the high cliffs above the Sesljan bay. The path is mostly flat, only in certain areas a little bit rocky and not exactly suitable for trolleys and bicycles.
Starting point
Rilke’s trail is located about 10 km from Trieste. From the Fernetiči border crossing point, hold the highway towards Venice and select the Sesljan (Sistiana) exit. When driving through the city center, follow the signs for Sesljan beach. At the top of the Sesljan marina, at Mare Pineta Camp, we see a signboard for Rilki’s footpath. There is a small parking place next to the campsite, which can be busy in good weather, so we can leave the car across the road. The starting point is basically by the campsite, where you start your walk.
Devin castle
The Devin castle stands on a high cliff and offers visitors a magnificent view at the gulf of Trieste. It was built in the second half of the 14th century, as a substitute of the decaying ancient castle, of which only ruins are visible today. New castle has been transformed into a museum, and plays an important role in political, economic and cultural terms. The larger part of the castle is open to the public, with a view of the main castle room, valuable artwork and historical exhibits. Most of the castle is a large park where we can see a wide variety of Mediterranean plants.
Working hours
You can see the interior of the Devin castle all year long, just pay attention to the opening hours which are adapted to the season. In the main season, between 1st of April and 30 September, the castle can be visited between 9.30 am and 5.30 pm. In March, October and November, the castle can be visited between 9.30 am and 4.30 pm, while in the winter you can watch the castle only on Saturdays, Sundays and on public holidays, between 9:30 am and 4:00 pm. The castle is closed on tuesdays. The entrance fee for the castle is 8 € for adults, 3.5 € for children aged between 7 and 16 years, children under the age of seven is free of charge.
Way back
We go back by the same way we came. In the meantime, we can look at the remains of two bunkers or just sit still on the bench and enjoy the view. On return, you can continue your trip to Sesljan beach, see the famous Portopiccolo, see the Miramare Castle or just take a walk around Trieste. The picturesque Rilke’s footpath is a good one day trip to enjoy the views and relax a little from everyday.
